Baking Perfect Banana Bread: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re lucky, you have a kitchen smell from childhood that instantly brings you comfort. For me, it’s banana bread. I can’t pinpoint when that nostalgic memory began, but for as long as I can remember, the scent of my mother’s freshly baked banana bread could instantly lift my spirits. And this recipe comes straight from her kitchen to yours.

Freshly made banana bread with a side of cream cheese.

I’ve been a bit under the weather this week and knew I needed something soothing. No video this time—unless you wanted to see me coughing my way through the recipe! The plus side with this recipe is that it doesn’t require any gadgets other than a bowl and whisk. Seriously.

The beauty of this banana bread is how easily you can make it your own. Stir in chopped pecans, fold in chocolate chips—whatever makes you happy. My heart always goes straight for the simple, pure flavor of banana, so I add a little extra.

Banana bread right out of the oven. Let it cool before transferring to a wire rack.

There’s nothing like walking into the house to the comforting aroma of banana bread fresh from the oven. I hope this recipe becomes a small, comforting tradition for you too.

I love smearing a bit of cream cheese on a slice and enjoying it by the fireplace. Is there anything better? Probably not. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to cherish these quiet moments. Before the holiday hustle begins, I wish you a few calm, cozy minutes with a warm slice of banana bread. Enjoy!

All the ingredients you’ll need for this scrumptious banana bread.

Ingredients:

  • ½ c softened unsalted butter
  • 1 c sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extra
  • 1 cup ripe bananas – mashed
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 1/3 c buttermilk
  • ½ c pecans chopped or chocolate chips – omit if you prefer

Directions: (No mixers or special equipment needed either)

  • Cream the butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well.
  • Add bananas, mix well.
  • Add flour, baking soda, salt and nutmeg together. Add alternately with buttermilk.
  • If you’re adding nuts or chocolate chips, add now and mix well.
  • Pour mixture into a well-greased 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.
  • Bake on 350° for 50-60 minutes or until done. Use a toothpick in the middle; once it comes out clean, it’s done. Let cool for 5 minutes. Remove and let cool on a wire rack.
